Kite Flight 2004
Callaway, Nebraska
Labor Day Weekend in Callaway, Nebraska has become as much a family/friends reunion as it is a kite festival. Webster's Dictionary defines festival as a time of celebration. Callaway is every bit a celebration of the best of friends and the best of kiting. Kitefliers began arriving on Friday and everyone was in a true celebratory mood. Great moments were shared and continued throughout the evening as more and more flyers arrived bringing their own special cheer.
Martin and Klaus from Denmark brought a wonderful international flavor to the festivities. It was made especially grand because they are darned nice guys, fine gentlemen, and good kiters. They were in the US on a bit of a holiday and through their contact with Mike Shaw, heard of the Callaway festival. Klaus is as incredible kite maker and astounded everyone with his creation. Thanks guys for taking time out of your vacation to join our little kite party. The other grand surprise was having Mike Gee from Jamestown attend his first Callaway festival. Mike is another of those nice guys, fine gentleman, and good kiter. He works so very hard filling up big pieces of sky...rarely will you ever see him sitting...and he is the heart of fun activities when the flying is done for the day. Great to see you Mike and look forward to seeing you and your trailer next year.
The usual cast of Callaway characters did their usual great job of making the festival a success. Mike Shaw, John and Mary Gabby, Don Murphy, Betty Suhr, Bruce Kenkel, Rhonda, Marian, Randy, Kathy and so many others enjoyed the best wind ever on Saturday and filled the sky with kites. The rain Saturday night did not damped the enthusiasm and Sunday saw another great day of flying. A special thank you must be given to the City of Callaway for their hospitality. We'll see you next year.
